Applicant Tracking Systems stopped being pure keyword counters years ago. Modern screening looks at context, which means a term sitting in a skills list at the bottom of your resume counts for less than the same term inside a sentence describing work you did. Tools help most with one specific step: finding what the posting requires and your resume does not say. Across 2,443 scans in our system the average match score is 76.4 and the typical resume is short by two keywords, not twenty.

What Changed and What Did Not

The story that ATS software simply counts keywords is out of date, but the correction people usually reach for is also wrong. Modern systems did not become intelligent readers who understand your career.

What actually changed is that matching became contextual. A skill mentioned inside a description of work is weighted differently from the same skill listed in isolation, because the surrounding text supports it. Job titles are matched to related titles rather than by exact string. Section structure is inferred rather than assumed.

What did not change: the system still cannot see anything it cannot parse, still cannot verify a claim, and still hands the recruiter an ordered list rather than a judgment. A resume in a two-column layout with skills inside a graphic loses in 2026 for exactly the reason it lost in 2019.

The Gap Is Smaller Than People Think

We measured this across the resume scans run through ATS CV Checker.

  • Average match score: 76.4. Median: 78.
  • Roughly 18% of scans land below 70, which is the band where an application stops competing.
  • The single most common result is a resume missing exactly two required keywords. The second most common is five.

That last number is the useful one. The mental image most job seekers have, that their resume is far off and needs rebuilding, does not match what we see. Two specific absences, found in a minute with a scanner or in fifteen minutes by hand, is the normal case.

The same requirements go missing repeatedly. Across all scans: data analysis (220 occurrences as a gap), agile methodologies (207), Python (202), SQL (196), project management (190), data visualization (119), Power BI (116).

Which Terms Are Actually Worth Adding

Not all keywords carry the same weight. The ATS Keyword Effectiveness Index compares the average match score of resumes containing a term against those without it, across every scan we run.

Terms with the largest measured positive effect are concrete and technical: microservices at +6.9 points, aws at +6.1, risk management at +5.1, mentoring at +4.6.

Terms sitting on the negative side are almost all declared soft skills: time management at -5.6, adaptability at -5.4, teamwork at -5.0, problem-solving at -3.6, communication at -3.3.

This deserves care in how it is read. It does not mean employers stopped valuing collaboration. It means a resume that spends a line writing “excellent team player” is typically a resume that did not spend that line on something the posting explicitly asked for. The words compete for the same limited space.

One caveat we state on every page that carries these numbers: they describe our matching model, not hiring outcomes. A higher score means better coverage of what the posting asks for. It is not a prediction of an interview, and no honest dataset can offer one.

Using the Output Without Wrecking Your Resume

Put terms where the work is. A skills row that reads “SQL, Python, Agile” is a claim. “Rebuilt the weekly reporting pipeline in SQL and Python, cutting manual prep from 6 hours to 40 minutes” is evidence, and it contains the same terms.

Add only what you can defend. If a tool suggests twelve additions, the ones you cannot discuss in an interview are liabilities, not gains.

Quantify what genuinely has numbers. Invented percentages are a common output of generated resume bullets and a common source of collapse in interviews. If you do not know the number, describe the change instead.

Stop optimizing past the point of return. Above roughly 85 you are tuning to a model. Moving a 61 to 80 is where the outcome changes.

Cut, do not only add. A tailored resume is shorter than your base document. Removing an irrelevant section is free and improves the density of what remains.

The second version is stronger for reasons that have nothing to do with algorithms. It is specific, it is checkable, and it gives an interviewer something to ask about. That it also scores better is a side effect of describing real work in the vocabulary the posting uses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do ATS systems reject resumes automatically? Most do not auto-reject. They rank and filter, and a recruiter works down the list. The practical result for a low-ranked application is the same, but the mechanism matters when you are deciding what to fix.

Does using AI to write my resume get flagged? Detectors flag generated prose, not the presence of keywords. Editing the output into your own phrasing removes the signal, and also removes the generic quality a recruiter would notice first.

Should I include a skills section at all? Yes, for scannability. Just do not rely on it as the only place a required term appears.

Is a PDF or a .docx better? Both parse correctly in current systems. Follow whatever the posting asks for; when it says nothing, .docx fails less often in older software.

How often should I rescan? Once per application, after editing. Rescanning repeatedly to nudge a score is where the time goes without the outcome changing.
